How is it possible to be so busy and NOT get anything done?
I think is the part of that I hate the most–the planning.
I was online all day (and boy is my shoulder telling me so!) looking up tickets to South Africa to see if it’s feasible to visit shirerain and claidheamhmor while I’m in Kenya (I finally emailed the secretary–after all of my looking around, she said that she’ll arrange it all with the travel agency, so I think I’m set…. South Africa here I come!), looking for car rentals, trying to figure out if it’d be best if I drove the car from Iowa to Minnesota and back or if I just drive to Minnesota and then fly out from there, checking email every 5 minutes in hopes that I would hear from Wisconsin (I haven’t–it’s really making me worried that I haven’t heard anything) so that I could finalize my plans, discovering that I had applied to the wrong school in Iowa for internal medicine, applying to the right school (I hope. Or did I apply to the wrong neurology department to begin with?), etc, etc, etc.
And then Chris reminds me that I need to buy tickets to his wedding in May, because it’s a tourist destination and things fill up quickly. *sigh*
So as it stands, I have a plan ticket to Iowa on the 1st. No return ticket. No rental car yet because I’m not quite sure where I’m returning much less when. Minnesota wrote, and unlike the other programs, they don’t pay for motels, so I now I have to call and make reservations – rather than just telling the place I was at that I wanted to extend.
*sigh* It’s just getting to be overwhelming. I want it all figured out NOW. *stomps foot like Veruka Salt*
So I told my parents tonight of my plans to extend out my trip to Kenya by a week. My dad got a little quiet when I told him that I had met my friend from the internet. π (and here he was worried about my younger sister moving to DC for a year!) But I did explain that we had met because of my Tolkien group, which I think calmed him down a little, and he’ll get over it. Visiting Donna (donnazita) and having her come out here relieved them of the worry that it was internet lunatics I was talking with. Actually my parents biggest concern is the 3 extra days that I’ll be spending in London. By myself. Which if I think about too much will freak me out too. Any tips for surviving on your own, Ali?
Well, I have to get off now. My shoulder has quite honestly taken me hostage and if I don’t behave, it’ll figure out a way to ruin everything for me.

It would be so cool to meet you!

Really? You’re coming? Eeee! I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am!
*bounces*
You’re going to be in London for three days? I totally deny that my first thought was ‘you’re going to be in the same city as him and breathing the same air and …’. π *sniff* I want to go to London. See how very painful it is to be near me? π
And good luck again for everything you still have to sort out.
*hugs*
Yeah, I think it’s set. The travel agent is looking for tickets this weekend.
Come with me to London! Seriously we could both fly back together, have fun for a couple of days and then separate. It would be the trip we had planned to New Zealand, only shorter and in a different location…

*wibbles*
Go with you to London? I didn’t even think of that and now that’s all I can think of! Okay, *takes a deep breath* I would love to (big surprise, I know)! I’ve just decided today to start a savings account for the soul purpose of going to London, but this is a bit sudden. And now I’m going to need info from you to see if I’ll be able to make it –
1) Dates.
2) Where were you planning to stay in London and what will it cost?
3) The flights you have booked – on which airline (this might be a problem – to get us on the same flight from here).
Uhm, what else? I can’t think of anything else at the moment, but that should give me an idea of what I’m looking at financially. So, I think drop me an e-mail when you have all of your info and I’ll go from there. *tries very hard not to hyperventilate*
If it’s possible I’ll call in birthday presents and Christmas presents for the next two years just to do this. π
1. So the dates I was looking at were the 15th through the 18th of February – unfortunately I only have time for a couple of days, but it’s more time than I’ve ever spent there.
2. I was thinking about hosteling it. Prices should run between 15-30 dollars a night–a big improvement on hotels and it should be relatively safe. But there are other options, such as hotels that I can get a student price on, that don’t cost too much more.
3. I won’t know about the flights until early next week. But I don’t think it should be a problem getting the same flight as me. π
ELLIE! This is going to be great!!!! I really really really hope we can work it out. I’d really love to have a buddy on my visit. And think of it this way–even though it won’t be quite the same as seeing it in Utah–there’s a good possibility of seeing snow and winter!! How’s that for incentive?
*HUGS* Come!

I don’t want to get my hopes up but the more I look at things, the more do-able it’s starting to look. I do have to sort out a couple of things and I can only do that when my mom’s back from holiday. So, now I have to wait until late next week. *sigh* But … but I really think I might be able to go with you. *squee*
So, now we wait. *fidgets*
Oh, and regarding the snow and winter – I don’t have clothes for that kind of weather, woman! But if I can I’ll be going anyway. π
*HUGS*
It’s going to be so much fun!

Julia, when I told my mom you were going to Kenya, she said to ask you if it had anything to do with the (Barbara) Danks Center (or something to that effect)? Our favorite minister Ed had moved there with his wife some years ago.
I have one piece of advice. Do not wear anything American or Pro-American (ie making it look like you came from the USA) when you travel abroad, esp. to England (this had been told to me by someone I knew who went to Europe).
π Donna
Um, I don’t think so. But I’m still gathering information about everything. Hopefully in a couple of weeks, I’ll know more.
I don’t think I own anything that could be labelled “American.” *giggles* But I’ll doublecheck. Thanks for the advice!
*hugs*
