small things

It’s so hard going to bed after a day off… Going to bed means the day has ended and tomorrow another day at work begins.

I’m worn out from work. I’ve been carrying 8-10 patients for a week now, discharging one, only to collect another 3…or a bouceback, a patient that I had only just discharged. The Q3 call (call every three nights) for 3 straight calls bled me dry and I’m only now recovering, only to face another call (my last!) on Wednesday. All things come to an end… Thursday will be the end of this rotation, just in time for me to move back to neurology with the three pagers and even more painful calls. (But on the plus side, another 2+ weeks in the NICU! yay!)

I tried to spend the day doing things around the house, namely scrapping paint off the wall again. It is excruciatingly slow, and I’m getting frustrated. I want to be done! I want my room to be pretty and painted brightly in one color that I picked out, not still finding deeper layers of paint below the salmon pink.

Plus, Chris is coming to visit in a week. One week from tomorrow. Guh. How could it have come up so quickly? He’s doing an interview tour, and I’ll only get to spend like twenty minutes with him, but it’s twenty minutes more than the usual. He’ll stay the night on Tuesday and hopefully find someway to entertain himself while I’m at work and then we’ll meet up before he takes off for the next destination. I’m hoping to get off early… I found out the exact days he was coming too late and I can’t get the day off. The plan is to then meet him in Chicago for the weekend…. I’ve avoided going to Chicago like the plague, but I don’t think I’m going to be successful this time. Anybody with any suggestions of what to do there?

In any case, I want things ready when he comes, show off my pretty house, and that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. *sigh*

Nonmedical update on the rest of my life upcoming, I promise.

Why have you been trying to avoid Chicago? I love Chicago. I wish I could go there all the time. One of my favorite places to go there is the aquarium. They have amazing diversity there that never gets boring. Plus, it’s on the coast of the lake, so it’s beautiful on a sunny day and makes for a great walk. Good luck with the paint scraping!

Well… I have a paralyzing fear of tall buildings (did you know that?) and everything that everybody talks about to do and see in Chicago is right next to those really tall buildings. Like the Sears building. *shudders* Same reason I’ve never wanted to visit New York, although I guess since Sam’s moving there, I’ll have to get over my fear eventually.

But the aquarium sounds lovely, so it’s added to the list. And I’ve been told that Chicago is a wonderful city, so it’ll be fun to experience it.

Now that you mention it, I think I’ve heard from someone else about your fear of tall buildings, Brooke maybe. That’s very interesting. Growing up in Berlin and Wash. DC, I’ve never had a problem, although, going to the top of the Eifel Tower and looking down made me a little woozy.

Anyway, about Chicago – don’t know if you’re aware, but the city has free museum days, where every day of the week, certain museums are free. It’s awesome. When I went there, I got a list of what’s free when, and managed to see all the places I wanted to without paying a dime. Of course, each place still has extra attractions that aren’t part of the free thing – like the aquarium won’t let you see the dolphins and manatees for free, but basically, you still get a lot of great stuff if you time it right. So, here’s a website you can check out for info:
        http://www.choosechicago.com/free.html

The aquarium I told you about is called the Shedd aquarium and it’s on the same penninsula with the Field museum (very cool) and the Adler Planetarium (all about 2 minutes walk from each other) and they are all free on Tuesdays. So if you’ll be there on a Tuesday, definitely check those out.

The Clarke and Glessner homes are free on Wednesdays and pretty close to the Field museum. They are cool if you like old homes and learning about the former millionaire families of the city. I love that kind of stuff so I could have spent all day in those homes. Also, they’re a good distance from all the tall buildings. 🙂

The best thing on Thursday is the Art Institute of Chicago. I loved looking around there. They have a display of “tiny rooms” that are just amazing. It’s actual homes from tons of different time periods recreated in miniature form. They’re amazing.

Lastly, there’s a cool park on Michigan ave, between Randolph and Monroe streets called Millenium Park that’s very fun and relaxing. A great place just to sit and talk. It’s just a block from the Art Institute.

Anyway, Benjamin is throwing a fit that I’m taking so long with email this morning. I need to go. Hope you enjoy your trip. Let me know if you need any more advice. 🙂

Me, pouring over weather forecasts and maps for months: “Well, as much as I really don’t want to do Texas, they really are going to have the highest likelihood of clear skies to see the solar eclipse. So I guess I’ll go to Dallas, instead of up north where I could visit friends. *grumbles and […]
