owie!
I rarely, rarely wear makeup. Applying makeup is time better spent sleeping and there’s part of me, that deep in my heart is rather offended that in order to be considered beautiful, I have to paint a mask on my face. Never mind that I actually think that I do dress up nicely. I’d never ever be considered a supermodel or even someone traditionally attractive, but I look okay. Except for the eyes.
Last weekend for the wedding (posts are still coming, promise), I went and had my makeup applied at one of those Macy’s boutique counters, where they had brown mascara. Not dark brown. Not black. Brown. The biggest problem that I’ve had with mascara is that I look like a raccoon when I wear it. My lashes are red. Light red, same as my hair, but red. When I put on mascara, all you can see are the dark lashes and I think I look ridiculous. And they don’t make mascara for the redheads. When I saw the brown, that granted was still too dark but much better, well, I was quickly talked into purchasing it.
The neurology residents had a party last night, and I decided that one of the best ways to get out of my depressive funk would be to go and to dress up a bit. So on went the mascara and the base and the lipstick. I even straightened my hair (go me!). I got home pretty late, and stayed up even later; and finally just brushed my teeth and went to bed.
This morning, I slept in, as I am wont to do on my days off and dashed off to church. And suddenly, my eyes began to hurt and stream tears. I thought it was because I’ve not been exposed much to the sun recently (long work hours will do that to a girl), but they didn’t get better. I had to pull off the freeway at one point and put in eye drops, which made it bearable enough that I made it to church. My left eye continued to burn and I kept dripping tears. One of the sisters reached back and patted my knee; I’m sure she thought I was over emotional today. I survived church (which was actually wonderful today with upbeat spiritual thoughts and lessons that resonated just right), managed to drive home (I don’t think I’m as much of a danger driving post call as I was today) and ripped out my contacts. My eye is still red and irritated and very painful.
RIght now, I’m wearing the glasses that broke on call 5 months ago. The side is taped with surgical tape and look completely ridiculous.
If it doesn’t improve by tomorrow, I’m going to have to head to a walk-in clinic or the ER and have my eyes irrigated and looked at with fluorescent lights. And ugh, I don’t want to do that. I’m off to get eye drops, to see if I can irrigate it myself.
popculturespong, if this is the pain that you’ve been dealing with for the past year, you once again, have my complete sympathy. Owie!
I don’t think I’ll be wearing mascara for a while, Toto.

Thanks! Lol. Sounds like you might be allergic to that mascara. Try Clinique next time.
Right now my biggest problem is the extreme pain from wearing glasses. I went to the beach today and didn’t wear glasses for 3 hours and my face still hurt. The doctor did say these Pataday eye drops has cleared up some of the allergies in my eyes, so hopefully I’ll be able to get back into contacts eventually and not have to deal with glasses.
Hope you feel better!
It was Clinique. 🙂 I think I got a little bit of mascara under my contact and it rubbed wrong all day long. I’ve probably scratched up my sclera… I just hope it heals quickly.
I’ve forgotten what it’s like wearing glasses, I haven’t done so in so long.
Thanks! So do I!

Oh I’m sorry…it sounds as if you’ve got an eye infection.
I’ve noticed a couple of things regarding mascara. One, some brands annoy me. I’m really sensitive, esp. with my condition now. I usually use Loreal Volumizing.
Another thing is, the way they put mascara on in the boutique counters is totally opposite of the way I put on mascara. I wonder if she used the wand too harshly and got some in your eyes; I’ve had my makeup done before where I thought they were putting the wand on my eyeballs. The best method is to just put it on the tips of the lashes.
Another question…what eye makeup remover did you use? That could’ve hurt you, if it’s not a sensitive formula.
Take care!
I think I’ve scratched up my sclera from getting a bit of mascara under my contact. It feels more irritated than infected, although I’m certainly tearing enough!
And, um, I didn’t remove my makeup. Fell asleep with makeup and contacts in. Not making that mistake again!
Thanks!

Yeah it sounds like something must have scratched your eye. It was just the one eye, right? I’m not the doctor, but I suggest not wearing your contacts for a few days. A few days is better than 11 months, what do you say?

Yowch! You poor thing! (I’m excited to see pictures from the wedding, by the way, and hear all about it. I hope you’re able to post about it soon.) But back to the eye/mascara debacle, that really sucks. I fall asleep with my make-up on all the time (which may explain my breakout issues), and I’ve never had a problem with my mascara. However, I don’t wear contacts (I think you might be right that some got under the contact… I can only imagine how much that would hurt). Anyway, I use good ol’ cheap Cover Girl Multi-lash Waterproof mascara with no problems. Go figure. And I’ve never had my makeup done at a counter. How was that? (I’ve considered but never followed through.)
*basks in sympathy* Thanks hun.
I got all of my pictures from the wedding uploaded on my computer. There’s not many of me, however, I’ll have to wait until Lars gets the professional ones.
My mom has really, really sensitive eyes. At one point she was wearing clip on sunglasses on her normal sunglasses. At the wedding, she could take off her sunglasses for the wedding pictures. I’m really feeling empathy now! I could barely drive to work this morning, and it was cloudy!
I’e never had problems before either. But I’ve learned my lesson.
Getting makeup done was pretty cool. It was a little bit of a sales pitch, and we kept getting interrupted by other customers. But they were really professional, and it meant that I didn’t have to do it myself. I think I’ll probably do it in the future.

Ah I’m sorry, I just got over an eye infection when I scratched my cornea. At least you know your problem. For some strange reason my left eye gets agitated when I take out my contacts and its kinda weird. I wore them again yesterday for the first time since my graduation last month (when I wore one contact in my right eye and squinted the whole time for the other because this was the first time I was able to graduate without glasses and I was determined) and it’s still bothersome.
Sorry about it though. Hope all is going good!
