Found LJ trolling (a favorite pastime)
I like this meme. And since I’ve added recently to my friends-list *waves to new friends*, there might be a lot that you don’t know about me.
How many times has someone on your friends list posted about something and you were really confused, but you didn’t want to ask because you knew you should know? How many times have you felt ‘guilty’ asking a close LJ friend a question that should be ‘obvious’?
Well, here’s your chance.
If you’ve missed a few things, missed an entry and are confused, ask me anything. Even something extremely basic. I’m not allowed to get even slightly irritated at any of the questions — we’ve all missed things before.
Or wordage number 2:
“This is the problem with LJ, we all think we are close, but we know nothing about each other. To rectify this, I want you to ask something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about.”
Ask away! I’m an open book (and really just want to waste time!)

Why exactly did you have to get surgery and what kind of surgery was it? π
That’s a good question (and not one that I’ve answered here).
So it’s a little bit of a story. I have a genetic bone disease, called “hereditary multiple exostoses”. It’s an autosomal dominant disease, meaning I inherited it from my mom and have a 50% chance of passing it on to each of my kids (forgive me if you know this already. I’m never sure). Basically, it causes beign bone tumors, shaped a little like crochet hooks or califlower florets to grow all over my body–on my knees, ankles, wrists, ars, ribs, and shoulder blade. I’ve had them since I was born and they grew with the rest of my bones and mostly stopped when I hit puberty. The problem is, is that they irritate the skin, muscles, tendons, nerves around them, causing me pain. When that happens… I have surgery, orthopedic surgery where my surgeon goes in with a bone saw and trims them off. This latest was my ninth surgery since I was 12–two surgeries on each knee, four on my right shoulder blade, my right pelvis (with a shoulder surgery–bad idea), and now my left shoulder blade.
Also, because of this disease, I have a shortened forearm and a short ring finger on my right hand. If I can find the picture that I used for a class presentation, I’ll post it.

Thank you for the explanation.
It’s amazing that you still find the strength to study medicine and help others. I’m full of admiration.
Will it ever get better?
Oh, and a couple more things…
I think there will always be physical pain in my life, a background level of pain (that’s part of the disease as well. My bones are just more senstive and achy), and I’m predisposed to arthritis as well. I don’t think that part will get better. But I do hope hope hope that the surgeries will stop and the sharper, more unbearable pain will be gone as well.

Hmmm… okay.
I read what you posted about your surgery and you sounded so terribly brave. I’d be so horribly frightened before and such a wimp after. I hope you are feeling better!!!
I know it’s a very personal question, and please feel in no way obliged to answer me, but when I read the last entries on your lj, I felt so worried about you and I don’t even know why!
And curiously enough, that’s a question that I probably would never dare to ask in real life. I would want to ask: what’s wrong with you? will you get better? is there anything I can do? But most of the time I would not dare to ask.
Which is actually really stupid, isn’t it?
If you spend a few hours with a friend or new acquaintance, reading a journal or chatting over a cup of coffee (or two or three or four), if you care… aren’t you *supposed* to ask “How are you -really-?”
Anyway, I hope you are feeling better and feel free to ignore my curiosity.

…and now I feel even more stupid about not reading the answers to the other comments first! Sorry!
π
Part of the answer you can read above.
But there are other parts that have gotten me thinking. Will I get better? How am I? Really? And those are a whole ‘nother set of questions.
As I said above, this is my 9th surgery. The last surgery (prior to the one I just had!) was the fourth of my right shoulder… my supraspinatous muscles–the one that goes right across the top of your shoulder blade is pretty much trash now–if you look at my shoulder, it slumps. I can move my arm in all directions, but it’s still weak. And I won’t ever get that back.
That’s part of why I was worried to have surgery… Every surgery takes its toll. Would I end up worse than I was before? Was the pain truly unbearable or was I being hasty? Would I regret it afterwards? Would I make through intern year?
In college, I had approximately a surgery a year. I worried that I would be able to make it through medical school, especially the physical years of the rotations where I would be require to do more than I’ve ever done before. And now that I’ve conquered medical school, I still worry that one day it’s going to be too much. But right now, I do believe that medicine is where I’m supposed to be and I do believe that I’ll hve divine help t get me there. Hopefully at some point, I’ll be done with surgeries (I can “foresee” that eventually my wrists will need work, and maybe another surgery for my knes–but that won’t be awhile.)
I think these experiences have made me a better dotor. I understand the patient’s POV better than anybody–and now being exposed to the other side of the curtain, I can be a better advocate for my patients.
How am I really? A little frustated that I’m here again. Glad that I’m recovering quickly (although still slower than I would like. Optimistic that everything will work out. In more pain than I want to be, but that will pass. Overwhelmed and appreciative of the love and support that I’ve been showered with. Grateful. π
Thank you for asking these. Really and truly. *hugs*

*hugs back*
I wish I could say something meaningful… But nothing will come to mind. Only that I think you are very, very brave & strong, to keep going even with all that pain and all those surgeries, and to stay so kind and caring, not turning bitter and resentful.
I hope that you’ll wake very soon and not feel any pain from the recent surgery, but instead simply be able to smile and go *squee* at the improved mobility.
Take care!

Here’s something that I’m curious about: what led you to choose to become a doctor? Did you know growing up–did biology class incite a major interest, or did anything else incite you?
It’s a great question and one that i’m really not sure of anymore.
In high school I loved biology and by the time I graduated I knew that I wanted to do either genetic counseling or be a doctor–in fact, I thought I was going to do both and go into pediatric or OB genetics.
College, I discovered that for the most part, I didn’t like the other “pre-med” students, so I just concentrated on passing my classes. I was a biology major because I loved biology. When I hit my junior year, I had to decide then whether I was going to take the MCAT–and just felt that being a doctor was what I wanted to do. So I took the test and applied to med school and got in.
I was also inspired because of the doctors I’d worked with and been around. My surgeon, Dr. Randall was a huge influence, and I love the idea of having such a rapport with patients.
I was pretty naive about what being a doctor was really like, and I wonder at times if I had known back then if I would have still chosen this. At this point, I’d still choose it again. π

This is a shalow question compared to what others asked (very insightful to learn all that about you!)… How old are you? How long until you graduate? What are you majoring in?
I thought I was going to be getting lots of shallow questions, these all have really had to make me think!
But I like your question as well. I’m 27 and I will graduate in 2 weeks, on May 20th. I’ve already done my undergraduate and majored in biology, so this will be graduating from medical school. I’ll just be a general “doctor-in-training” for a while, but one day, I’ll be specilized in internal medicine and neurology.
Does that makes sense? The medical world can be pretty confusing.
Can I ask you a question too? What’s your name? Or at least a name that you go by on the internet? I’ve not known quite how to address you and have felt really really bad about that. π (But I’m glad that I’m getting to know you better!)

Oooh graduation is near! How cool is that!! What you said makes total sense…
I go by Barely on the internet. Just call me Barely. π (I’d tell you my name, but in an f-locked post. Security reasons.)
Barely works. Can I ask you how you came up with that?
(and I was digging through your old old old LJ posts and found your name…. So all is cool.
Hehe, Barelelegal is a song by my favorite band: The Strokes.
Cool! π

Mostly frivolous I’m afraid. No need for essay format π
What is your all time favourite episode of The X-Files?
Did you ever have a crush on a fictional character/characters? Who?
Did Howl’s charmed suit work on you?
Did you like/hate/tolerate high school?
Can you elaborate a little on the nature of your friendship with this fellow you seem afraid to lose?
Have you ever visited Canada?
Have you read all of LM Montgomery’s books? If so, which is your favourite non-Anne book? Favourite one in the Anne series?
Perhaps I’ll be more serious when I’ve not spent the day eating cookies (and cookie dough). Feel free to ask questions about me.
You spent the day eating bookie dough? I’m sooo jealous!!
You’re probably going to get essay format, ’cause that’s how I think.
1. All-time favorite episode? Do you have any idea how hard of a question that is?? Probably “The Unnatural”. Because I love Jesse Martin, love David’s writing and directing, love baseball, and absolutely love that last scene. But that’s a hard call. Any episode that showed Angsty!Mulder is my favorite… for some reason, I love to see the boy hurt (mostly because I have this urge to comfort).
2. Crush on a fictional character–see above. I got into my X-Files addiction sophomore year in college, after the movie came out. I had never seen the show, and my best friend was into it and we started watching it together. I was hooked by the second episode. Within a year, I had seen all of the eppies except for about 6, I think. I lived and breathed X-Files. I started out watching the show because of the awesome red-headed doctor, but quickly fell for her partner. And fell hard. I’ve never done that before or since.
One funny story–I once in the middle of a conversation called a friend of mine “Mulder.” Yep, I was that bad.
(And I’ll admit to a crush on GIlbert as well. But well, who wouldn’t?)
3. Howl’s charmed suit…. I actually haven’t watched it yet! I took it home to my parent’s, turned it on, fell asleep–and left it in the DVD player. *sigh* I did read the book, but that was a few years ago.
4. High school. To talk about high school would require an entire separate entry. π High school was hard. I lived in a very, very, very small town of 250, moved there when I was in the fourth grade and instantly became the center of torment, which really didn’t change until my junior year. I did like the school part of things, though, the learning. And I had the biggest crush on one of my classmates, which made things more bearable.
5. I’m doing a separate response to this. I’m afraid I’ll break down LJ if I don’t. π
6. I have visited Canada!! My senior year in high school, my family took a vacation up to Glacier National Park, and we went driving through Alberta and some of British Columbia. I loved it–that was some of the most beautiful places that I’ve ever seen. I want to go back–I really want to go to Toronto, and PEI, and I’ve got this hankering to go to Lake Louise on my honeymoon.
7. I think I have read them all. Even all of the short stories. The last on the list was “Jane of Lantern Hill” and I found that at a used bookstore a few years back. My favorite Anne book is “Anne of the Island.” There’s so much in that book that I love–I love the college scenes, because I’ve related to that. I love the blossoming romance between Anne and GIlbert. I love the setting and Patty’s Place and all of her roommates. Favorite non-Anne–another difficult question. I’m torn between the Emily series (I can’t separate them. I can’t!) and The Blue Castle. I wish I was like Valancy.
#5 The nature of my friendship.
The short story. Chris is my best friend.
The long story…
We’ve been friends for the last 3 years. I think I’ve posted about that before (I’ve gone back through and tagged most of my posts about him). He’s in medical school, like me. We became friends right after he started dating Melissa, so unlike most of the other friendship that I’ve had with guys, I never really developed a crush on him. Well. Not a big one, in any case. (He’s cute. I wouldn’t be a het female if I didn’t admit that. π )
He’s been there for me more times than I could count. I saw him every day through most of second year, and even during third year with our crazy busy schedules, I still saw him every week. That whole “you are my constant, my touchstone” speech of Mulder’s? Well, he’s mine. I still have no idea why he chose me to be his friend (and it was his decision). I don’t. And I think that’s what freaks me out the most–because I am so different from his other friends, I therefore must be as easily cast aside. I worry that I’m the one who is the most invested in our friendship… but I’ve worried about this since the year of second year, when we were going our separate ways, and he still calls to talk to me, so I guess I just freak out too much.
Things are going to be very very very different now. I’m moving away, he’s staying here for a year and then moving someplace else for residency. I’ll get to see him maybe three times a year–three times, after spending virtually three years with him. I dread it. See, all of my other friendships, I know that we’ll be able to sustain things through email and phone calls, but I don’t know if that will be the case with him.
I’ll freely admit (although I’ve never told him this. I guess I worry that he’d take it wrong) that I love him, as much as anybody in my life, and I can’t imagine loving my boyfriend/fiancee/spouse more. But I’ve never been in a relationship, so who knows? And there are times when I wonder what it would be like dating him… But we are soooooo different in some crucial areas (like religion. Or the fact that he’s a neat freak and I’m not. And he’s a athletic fanatic, and I’m not.) and while a friendship can handle those differences, a more serious relationship probably couldn’t. And he doesn’t like me that way, so all is cool.
Does that answer your question?
I was going to ask you a bunch of questions as well… but it’s getting ridiculously late, so I should get to bed. π
I’ll get to them tomorrow.

aahhh…so much information! but now I feel like I know you a little more. I’m going to cram all my responses into one reply (I wouldn’t advise eating cookie dough all day…I regretted it).
I guess I was a little unfair with the X-Files question. There is no way I could choose just one episode either. But I do adore the ending of The Unnatural. And pretty much any other ‘shippy moment.
I was actually referring to Howl’s suit in the book…I had such a crush on him when I read it. The movie is a little weird, but entertaining.
If you get out to PEI, try to do all of the Maritimes. I have great love for Cape Breton, which is where my family is from. The whole area is just gorgeous. But of course, PEI and Green Gables is the priority.
I have a fellow like that in my life as well. I don’t mention him much…and I’ve never told him just how much he means to me…but I know what you mean when you say you can’t imagine loving a boyfriend/finance/spouse more. Which may in fact be a problem, but…well, what are you going to do?
Where are you moving to, by the way?
I’m sorry it was long. π I’m long-winded on topics that I enjoy.
Did you continue watching the show after David left?
It’s been so long since I read Howl’s… So long. I read all of Dianna’s books one summer and haven’t picked them up since. She can write amazing characters and settings, but the woman has absolutely no sense of a climatic ending, and that drove me nuts. But I should pik that one up again.
I will definitely add the Maritimes to the list… π That’s so cool that that’s where your family is from. Do you plan to return there when you’re all done?
And I soooo understand… I sometimes wonder if I haven’t been dating anybody because I’ve had Chris in my life. I mean, I think three-fourths of my medical class were convinced that we were dating, even when he was engaged… and I have pictures of me and him displayed prominently in my house. Hmm. Will have to think about that some more. (but frankly, I’d rather have Chris and the comfortable companionship than the painful first dates, you know?)
I am curious about this fellow of yours. BUt I’ll refrain from asking questions. π
And may I just say that I love your icon…
