Jet-Lag and Music

posted in Uncategorized |

After years of sleep deprivation and learning to fall asleep whenever I can (thank you med school!), I scoffed at the idea that I would be affected by jet-lag. My transition to Kenya time (which is in the same time zone as Moscow, Russia. How amazing is that??) was so smooth–I took my Ambien and slept like a log. I had a few days of some mild sleepiness for a few hours, but it passed very quickly.

I crashed mentally, absolutely exhausted, at around 5 pm yesterday (around 3 am in Kenya) and it was all I could do to keep myself awake until 10 (of course, I then got involved in checking my email so I didn’t actually go to bed until 11–addicted? moi?)… and woke up promptly at 5. The funny thing, is that the times really aren’t corresponding to my sleep cycle in Africa, so I’m not sure what’s happening.

I’ve been spending the morning surfing iTunes, because I’m bound and determined to be at least one of the 100,000 download winners (http://www.apple.com/itunes/1billion/) and since I only found out about it this morning, I have only a few chances left. I’m now the proud owner of the “Rob Thomas – iTunes Originals Album” and have been swooning listening to Rob talk about making sweet music all morning. I own 114 songs sung by Rob in one band or another. That tops Eva Cassidy (84), Loreena McKennitt (63), Fisher (61), and Carbon Leaf (51). Rob is not the most populous artist on my playlist, however. At 162 songs, Alan Parsons takes that award. πŸ™‚

I have been out of the music world for quite some time, and I’m running out of ideas of songs to purchase (not to mention money). Suggestions of songs that I must, must have? New or old, it doesn’t matter. I just want a chance at a black nano!

Anything by the Barenaked Ladies is always good πŸ™‚ I also enjoy Anna Nalick, Maroon 5, They Might Be Giants, Cake, and even a bit of the newer Kelly Clarkson stuff.

Barenaked Ladies, however, is my absolute favorite. Anything from their album Everything To Everyone is awesome.

I love BNL! I don’t think I purchased anything besides “Another Postcard” from their latest album, which must be remedied. Any particular favorites?

I did forget to put TMBG on my “most songs” list! At 163, I could count them as #1, however, since 20 of them are the 20 sec long shorts of “Fingertips”, that’s probably not fair.

And yes, I’ll admit to have a bit of a secret admiration for Kelly Clarkson. I’ve found myself singing along with her several times!

        BNL = LOVE!

Some of my favorites from their last album (a new album comes out this fall *dies over and over again*) are:

        Aluminum
        Celebrity
        Take it Outside
        Upside Down
        Testing 1,2,3
        Next Time
        For You

Upside Down might be my favorite, but it’s so hard because I adore BNL so much it’s hard to pick favorites. Especially after you’ve seen them perform live! *le sigh*

I actually BOUGHT Kelly Clarkson’s latest CD *blush* And I actually really enjoy it lol Lots of angst and for some reason that really appeals to me in music lol Almost anything from the Breakaway album is a good pick. I don’t think I could choose a favorite.

        Have fun!

    First, welcome back!!

I know I haven’t commented or anything…but I read all your posts, and I’m really amazed by what you’ve been doing, all of it. That’s wonderful. I’m very glad it worked out well. And a very late congratulations on the Milwaukee! πŸ™‚

As for songs. Well, I recommend anything by Jack’s Mannequin or Something Corporate (particularly Jack’s Mannequin if you weren’t a fan of SoCo once or if you haven’t listened to either/aren’t sure). My favorite band ever.

And Semisonic, especially “Gone to the Movies,” “Chemistry,” “Singing In My Sleep,” and “F.N.T.”

I was just sent a song last night by The Veronicas and am already extremely addicted to it. Hee.

And if you haven’t heard “The King of Carrot Flowers, pt 2” by Neutral Milk Hotel, I highly recommend that one, especially, of theirs.

OMG! I was surprised to see Loreena McKennitt, Carbon Leaf, and Eva Cassidy listed there. I dont know much of Eva, but her version of “Field of Gold” is one of my favorites. Love Loreena and have lots of her stuff and I’ve been a big fan of Carbon Leaf for a few years now (I even got to see them play when they came to my little college town and got their autograph and such).

For suggestions: when I know someone like Loreena, I have to suggest Angels of Venice. Most of the songs are just more musical than with a singing voice but I think you’d really like them. And their style is very different- you have songs that are just pretty and flowy while at the same time have songs that sound Asian or Medival, or almost new age in a way. I can’t think iof any particular songs to suggest other than them in general. I think my favorite band is Denial, but theyre more Cincinnati based and I don’t think they’d really be one iTunes. For fun stuff, Melanie C is really cool, and if you want more relaxing, soothing stuff Joanne Shenandoah is great (she’s a Native American singer and alot of the songs are pretty peaceful and nice). And that’s all I can think of right now~ hope you reach your goal!

The song downloading binge! Might I join you? We just recently (well… that’s how my mind remembers it, anyway) got a faster connection, and a better computer, so I can now actually download music, like, you know, normal people.

Thumbs up on the Rob Thomas. Have to remember to look him up myself.

    *huggles you*

    • 2025 – Quilts! 01/07/2026
For Christmas, my sister and I made National Park quilts for my parents, sister and brother-in-law, and niblings. 6 of them were small lap quilts, with a simple print, batting, and a backing that we sewed. The last was a queen size quilt for my sister’s camping trailer – it was a challenge putting it […]
