the news
I headed out of town on pretty short notice for the weekend, up to visit my grandparents. I wish I could have spent a couple more days there…there are so many memories of vacations there… playing “pioneers” under the willows, starting the “Cove Country Cousins Club,” dressing up in the girls dorm. It’s always a place of reflection, of literary and politic discussion with my grandparents, of reminiscing of camping trips (my grandpa can tell some doozies. Although I could have done without all of the mice tales).
It was hard to say goodbye… knowing that it’ll be most likely a year before I see them again… a year when they are already getting older and frailer. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary while I was there. 58 years. I started to cry as I left. One more goodbye. One more uncertainty.
I had hoped to stay longer–two days was hardly enough time. But unfortunately, I had business back at home…contacting my bank, faxing contracts and bank statements, writing out checks, because…
I GOT MY HOUSE!
π After a day and a half of bartering with (as Chris put it) persnickety sellers who refused to go down, we managed to reach a settlement that while it wasn’t the best, satisfied everybody. I still have to be approved for the loan, and the place gets inspected tomorrow, but hopefully, the place will close on the 23rd, ready for me to move in.
Wanna see pictures of it? Go here: http://jcd1013.lotrinklings.net/house/house.html. We visited it twice and in that time, the family had already moved out a lot of their belongings, so you can get a sense of what it will look like when I move in with my very meager belongings.
I’m very excited, even with all of the oh-so-fun paperwork. It’s going to be tight living for a while, but I think it’s worth it. I’m already planning out the guest room, to entice many many visits. π

How ADORABLE!!!! CONGRATS!!!!!!!!
That’s so awesome π What a great sized house! It’s too bad you won’t have an Ikea store close. They are fantastic for furnishing a house inexpensively. π But it is great that there are so many built-ins! Wow!
You know we all want more pictures once you get settled!!!
The closest Ikea is apparently 71 miles away. If I ever decide to relive my adventures driving through Chicago, I could visit one then…
I know! I love the little built-ins. *happy sigh*

That looks like the perfect house. Congrats! In fact, it’s exactly what we’re looking for too, but can’t afford in any decent neighborhood. I’m curious what you paid for it, because a house like that in our area is about $250,000. So, we’re happily renting for another year (just renewed our contract). However, ditto on the Ikea comment from Shanae. In fact, there’s one opening tomorrow only 10 minutes from here and my friend and I already have plans to be there. I never realized how much of a following Ikea had until I saw that there are people who have been camped out in front of the store, waiting for it to open, for the last 3 days!
Thanks!
I paid a little less than $100,000 less than what they are going for in your area, and I felt that I was probably paying $2000 too much based on what other homes in the area were selling for. But I was tired of house hunting and really did love the place, so I gave in.
I’ve heard of Ikea and I know that they opened one up around here (or were talking about it). I don’t know what I’m going to do for the furniture. π
That first sentence of my reply makes no sense. This is why I go for real numbers, because when I try to subtly hint, I end up confusing myself and my audience. Hang being polite!
So, I paid $154,500, plus around $2500 for closing costs. It is certainly reasonable, but it sure feels like a lot.

Your first answer made sense to me, but I appreciate your openness. I think that’s a great deal on a home like yours. The last house I picked up a flyer for, thinking, “this is a nice, modest home; maybe we could afford this one” ended up being $369,000. It barely had more floor space than my apartment. That’s when I stopped looking and signed the lease renewal. π

Congratulations – the house looks absolutely beautiful!
Thank you!
There will definitely be room when you and Melancthe decide to come and visit!

Congratulations! It’s so cute! You have your own House o’Dreams to potter about with a decorate! (I love houses)
I know, I will!! *happy sigh* I can see now why Anne was so excited over her little place. But LMM skipped over all of the nonromantic details about haggling over the inspection details. But soon *hope, pray* it will be completely mine!
I sure hope that my place does not come with the little critters that yours did. I’ve had nightmares of how I would deal with the little furry vermin. *shudders*

YAY! Congrats! The house is really cute. The outside at first made me jump because it kinda looked my like my great grandmother’s (I think thats right) house. But the outside is decieving as the inside looks really big- and I adore alot of those old quirky things (built in bookshelves, reading spots, laudry shoot etc). Do you know when it was built? But in any case, you did a great job! Yeeeee!
Oh shoot- now you make me excited about me having my very own house one day too. Some things can’t come soon enough!
Thank you!
The house was built in 1951, so it has that old and new feeling to it. And yes, it was definitely all of the nooks that convinced me that this was the place for me. π
You’ll get your house. I’m not sure I was ready for this step, but it’ll be fun once I get to move in and make it mine. π
