grumpy dumpy
Grumpy. Very very grumpy. Day started off bad with weekend attending acting like we were all idiots… and has gotten progressively worse, with attending not only thinking we were idiots, but not telling me what’s going on in that ever-so-smart head of hers. Now, I’m sitting in the ICU, waiting to make sure that my patient doesn’t go into funky heart rhythms that I would have to get him out of (funky means deadly, btw), and I’m bored. And cranky. Not a good combination.
Flist, get me out of my funk. Tell me funny stories. Tell me about your boring life. What did you do today, the day that normal people don’t have to work? Ask me probing questions. Or the meme that was floating around a few days ago: ‘Ask me my “Top 5” of anything – “real”-life related, tv-related, movie-related, whatever. You can ask for either my Top 5 Favorite or Least Favorite. Whatever you desire.’

Was there a Top Five meme going around? Ohhh, I love Top Fives! It’s a weird passion.
So, tell me your: five favorite heroes in literature, five works by L.M. Montgomery, and five favorite X-Files episodes 🙂
Five favorite heroes (When I first was considering this, I was thinking feminine as well… but then realized that since most of what I read has lead female characters, decided to stretch myself a bit and think more obscurely and hit the gentlemen.)
5. Ender (and I know you just had the whole rant against Card! But because you mentioned it, this is what my brain was freezing on). Not so much in Ender’s Game, but more in the sequels, where he was flawed and trying to atone for his mistakes. In Speaker for the Dead, he was awesome. The “relationship” with Jane squicked me out though.
4. David Copperfield. Okay, the whole reason I got into the book was the BBC miniseries starring a cute widdle Daniel Radcliffe (and Dame Maggie Smith! Oh, the love). And David is rather dull and blind… but in the end, he does realize that the plain Agnes is exactly suited for him.
3. Harry Potter. Nothing like teenage angst and prophecy. And I’m kinda sucker for dark hair.
2. Don Quixote. Read this book in college and just absolutely fell in love with it. There was something so charming, so believable about how devote ol’ Quixote was to his insane delusions that you almost, almost believed that there were evil magicians about turning giants into windmills.
1. Frodo Baggins. Do I really need to say anything more about this??

5. A Tangled Web. I liked this because it shows her incredible power with the short stories–only these are a dozen shorts all woven together. Plus, it’s one of her more mature books (I think I absolutely boggled at some of the scenes. There was some line about how one of the characters was getting married just to have sex that was shocking and very interesting to then dissect the rest of her books in that light!)
4. Emily Climbs. I love all of the Emily books, but this one I probably reread the most. I’m a sucker for the youthful romances, (probably ’cause I never experienced it), so all of the little flirtations with Teddy, before it gets nasty and angsty in Emily’s Quest, makes my heart patter. Plus, I really love the developement of the secondary characters, and I think Maud really enjoyed describing the interactions between Emily and Aunt Ruth.
3. Jane of Latern Hill. It took me years to track this one down, and wow, it’s one of my favorites. Jane is perky and the whole “homemaking” thing is sweet. What an interesting insight into
2. The Blue Castle. Wow, I want a Barney. And I can count way too many times where I have felt exactly like Valancy.
1. Anne of the Island. Of all of the Anne books, this one resonants with me the most. It takes place in the college years, which is where I’ve been for the past decade, it’s a self-discovery book, and Anne and GIlbert get together. What more do you want?
Favorite X-Files (always the hardest question and really, can not possibly limit to 5, but in the order as they occur to me).

I did mean heroes as opposed to heroines (a random choice), so it’s cool you did it that way despite my unclear specifications.
I don’t actually dislike Card, I just resented his ‘if you don’t have my tastes then you stink’ blurb. Of his books, I’ve only read Ender’s Game and Enchantment, which I thought were good but not really my style. I LOVE David Copperfield; one of my top five books, actually! I enjoyed that miniseries too, though grown-up David was so very plain (that horrible beard at the end!!), the aesthete in me couldn’t love him as much as I was wanting to.

Emily Climbs is my favorite Emily book too, and Anne of the Island is probably the Anne book I reread most often. Just can’t beat the romance! I like Jane but I have trouble getting into her story, she’s so capable and unlike me! No need to tell you The Blue Castle is a big favorite of mine… and Barney may be my #1 Montgomery hero. As for Tangled Web – there’s a line about sex in it??!??! Where???? In reference to which character?
As for X-Files, I’m impressed because I’m not sure I could actually name my top five. Well, maybe. But Pusher would be tops on it for sure. And Detour is absolutely one of the best banter episodes ever! “If it rains sleeping bags…”

I went out to go to the grocery store and accidentally ended up at Target! How does this keep happening? 😉 I also went to the Rite Aid, which I’d never been to before, and WOW. It was really cool. It had all these things that weren’t drugs, like shoes and craft supplies and furniture. And it had like three aisles of hair stuff…it was AWESOME.
That’s what this normal person does on non-work days, I guess. Despite repeated promises of shopping abstinence.
So, in light of that, tell me your five favorite stores. And five favorite things to do on a day off.
There are so many time warps involved in shopping, I’m not surprised. I once went into the store with the sole purpose of buying windshield wipers and fluid, spent two hours there, walked out with bags on my arms, and realized that I had never even gone into that area of the store. Of course, the store was closing, so I had to come back. *shakes head*
Favorite stores (no particular order):
1. Costco. I like it much better than Sam’s Club for the reason that they carry my Black Forest ham in the perfect thick slices that I like so much.
2. Home Depot. I’ve invested way too much of my money there in recent months.
3. All a Dollar. The random things that you can find there, that are so exactly what you need amazes me.
4. Walmart. I practically grew up in a Walmart, since the place I lived at was way too small to have any other shopping place. I don’t like it as much now, but when Sam Walton was alive, and founded the business to be a USA, homeland pride sort of store, with good employee benefits, I had no qualms about supporting it. These days, I don’t know.
5. Barnes and Noble. Another place that I ought to just invest stock in.
Favorite things to do on a day off:
1. Sleep in. I’m up at 5 or 6 every single morning. The days that I don’t have to work–most mornings are spent in bed.
2. Browse my computer. I don’t know how I manage to waste so much time on my ‘puter, but I do. These days, I’ve spent trying to set everything up right and getting the Windows portion configured, so it is useful.
3. Go to the library or the art store. I don’t do this nearly as often as I used to, but the libraries of Milwaukee are much less impressive than the downtown SLC library…
4. Go to movies. I saw lots of movies this past month. I’ve missed that.
5. Talk to friends. 🙂

I went to see “Night at the Museum” today, and there was a couple who came in after me who couldn’t agree on where to sit. I was thinking of yelling, “SIT DOWN! SIT DOWN ALREADY!”
Tomorrow I will probably get up very early to go to the art store’s sale to get supplies so I can paint, paint, paint. My next painting is for the HP contest at TLC.
I can’t think of anything particularly humorous at the moment. ;(
Night at the Museum was a fun movie, although it fell short of its potential, I felt… 🙂
Ee! What are you planning on painting? And did I tell you how beautiful those paintings were of your friend’s daughter???

I’m not sure exactly what I’m painting for the HP contest (but I know it’s due on the 22nd!!!!) I also have to do the 4th painting my friend commissioned, plus I have another commission by a friend of hers! 🙂
I liked NATM. I wasn’t overwhelmed but I’m not sure what else I was expecting. What I thought was funny, in a way, however…was the fact when Owen Wilson and Steve Coogan came back, I was “taken out of” the realism because there was NO WAY they could have walked back in less than, say, a week. lol……

(it’s me that needs a good hit with a slate)
Today I slept in until 2pm (which the working population might envy, but which is actually quite horrifying. Thirteen hours of sleep is not normal, or desired). During my prolonged slumber I had a bizarre dream wherein several of my dream-friends were turned into circus animals and then disappeared into sparkles in the sky. Then of course I had to go on a mission to resuce them. I begin to suspect that anti-depressants have a subconcious influence as well as a concious one (makes sense I guess…it’s all brain chemistry…as far as I understand).
Instead of being productive in the remainder of my day, I read The Hero and the Crown (good, if at times confusingly worded) and worked half-heartedly at my sketch of Hugh Laurie as House. I am perhaps the slowest “artist” imaginable.
As for questions….I’ll go unoriginal: top five bands/musicians, top five movies, top five places you want to visit but haven’t yet, top five historical figures you’d like to meet and one question you’d ask each of them.

When I’m not with my daughter or my workers, most of the time I’m on my computer. I love to gather links — hundreds of links so that I can procrastinate and go, “Look at all the links I have!” I don’t know why. It’s a thing. I keep ignoring the fact that it would take me ten years to read all of the fanfictions I have bookmarked; and instead, I continue to bookmark more. Hehe.
That’s one thing among many that I do to entertain myself. I can always find something fun to do.
