Top Ten Reasons I love being Mormon
So Mitt Romney, Presidential candidate extraordinare, is giving a speech tomorrow to address his Mormon faith. Which is all good and everything, except it’s going to be so serious and “all about family” and how “we’re just like everybody else”. And I gotta say, being Mormon has some quirks and perks that are just unbeatable.
10. Funeral potatoes and frog-eyed salad. At every wedding, funeral, relief society function. They make the world awesome. *ignores the other staple of lime jello with carrots*
9. Single wards. Been part of them for 10 years now. They’re like bars for hookups, only without the gross drunken come-ons, and you don’t have to do the “left hand search.”
8. Mo Tab (aka Mormon Tabernacle Choir). People flock to see them like they’re a rock band.
7. Sen. Harry Reid. The Senate Majority Leader is a democratic Mormon. How awesome is that! I wish he was running for president, then I might actually have somebody to vote for.
6. Napoleon Dynamite. Except for Borat, there ain’t a more (annoyingly) quotable movie around. Gosh!
5. Garments. Not only do I never have to worry about the butt wedgies anymore, I’ve got an extra layer of clothing to keep me warm in the frigid Midwestern winters.
4. Ken Jennings. Yes, it was annoying that he won over and over again. But you know that in your heart of hearts, you were cheering him on. Now he keeps a blog and he’s seriously nerdy and funny. And smart. Does your religion have Ken Jennings? I didn’t think so.
3. Mormon movies. No, not the recent travesties such as The Singles Ward and sequels/prequels. We’re talking the 70s and 80s Church approved videos. Especially worth checking out are the annual classics, Nora’s Christmas Gift and Mr. Kroeger’s Christmas (Jimmy Stewart’s last performance, I’ll have you know). Also highly recommended: Pioneers in Petticoats, a good moralistic commentary on immodesty that will warm your feministic-hardened heart. Lastly, I defy you to find better entertainment than Johnny Lingo and his eight cow wife.
2. President Gordon B. Hinckley. For being 96 years old, he is amazingly spry and witty. I’m such a fangirl ( did I tell you about the time I got to shake his hand?) and I wanna be old like him.
1. The horns really come in handy. As do the multiple wives.

I’m really get tried of shoveling snow post call. I’m already done with winter.
My annual review went well. Only one mention about my conference attendance, which I did get to defend myself about. Overall, they’re not threatening to kick me out of the program. But I gotta finish my license application or I’m going to be in serious trouble.
Call was so busy for the first part of the night. We went from 1 patient yesterday morning to 7 this morning. But I got to do two subclavian central lines last night, which was the first time I’ve done a subclavian. I find them much more terrifying than internal jugular lines because there’s lungs and a big fat artery that I risk hitting. No complications this time.
And now to bed.

I always forget Harry Reid is mormon!
I didn’t know until last year, when the Democrats took over the Senate. And I was surprised at what a non-issue it was in the political discussion on NPR, more like a “oh by the way”, rather than the freak out that it’s become with Mitt. Maybe it’s because he is democrat and therefore religion loyalities aren’t as much of a voting issue.

I found the Mormon Pride and Prejudice hugely amusing, though it’s not what I’d call a “good” movie. And ever since I’ve been curious about the movie there was an ad for in front of it, Baptists at the Barbecue. You also have Orson Scott Card, pioneer of Mormon science fiction. I would say, as a group, you’ve certainly got your highlights! π
(P.S. I had an LDS pal in high school and we did a bit of friendly poking at each other’s traditions… hope you don’t think me too flippant.)
I’ve never seen that P&P version! I know, bad Austen fan and bad Mormon! Mormon cinema went through a phase where they were making “deep and thought provoking and (slightly) controversial” movies, followed by the slap stick comedies with jokes that only Mormons would get and for the most part, I’ve avoided them all because they are bad cinema. Bad storytelling, cheap filming, atrocious scripts.
I wouldn’t call the selection of movies up there “good” either (well, Mr. Kroeger’s Christmas would come closest), but they’re amusing. They’re best watched with little sleep and lots of friends over for teh mocking.
OSC! I did forget him. He’s so hit and miss at times.
And no, I didn’t think you were flippant. Hello, did you see my list? π My best friend is Catholic so I’ve certainly given her grieve about your traditions as well. It’s all in fun.

First, congratulations on a good annual review! YAY!
Second, congratulations on a successful subclavian! YAY! (Now if only I actually knew what a subclavian was… but it sounds impressive, so I’m YAYing for you anyway!) YAY!
Lastly, what does it say about me that the one thing on your list that intrigued me the most was “garments”? I guess because I had no idea such a thing even existed in the Mormon faith. (Am I just really uneducated or do a lot of people not know about this?) Anyway, it’s very interesting – I read a tiny bit more about it, and … who knew? (Clearly not me.)
P.S. I am also done with winter.

Aww, don’t you love me anymore? -sniff- You replied to everyone’s comment but mine. -sniff- -sniff-
Yours required more thought. π And then I fell asleep around 7 last night putting an end to thought. And you really do stalk my journal, don’t you! *hugs*
Firstly, thanks! I’m always so shocked when they aren’t saying things like “Julia, I think we made a mistake.” LOL. Especially when I was so frightfully honest with them about my doubts about neurology.
Secondly, thanks! I haven’t caused any major damage to anybody yet and they’re probably the scariest thing I do in my job. Subclavian central lines I’m basically poking blindly hoping to end up in the right vein and not drop the lungs or hit an artery and get uncontrollable (and unstoppable) bleeding.
Thirdly, I wasn’t sure how many of my flist would know about garments, but uh, the newspapers have certainly been bringing them up (there’s been at least 3 major newspapers with articles about how you can’t trust the Mormons because of their magical underwear). It’s not something that I regularly talk about either, so that’s why it may not have come up. But they are super comfortable. π
Any other questions? You need to get back online. I’m getting antsy about this scrabble game!

So what did you think of Mitt Romney’s speech? I thought it was good, but I’m a fangirl already. And ditto to the Pres. Hinckley thing. I so jealous of his grandkids. I’d love to just call him any time and chat with gramps. What an amazing man with an amazingly powerful testimony. May he live forever.
I actually didn’t hear it! One of those busy days at work and I completely forgot to listen. I can probably find it online.
I’m not really fond of any of the presidential candidates. I don’t think Mitt has enough experience and his ideas seem to be too idealistic. Of the republican candidates, I actually like John McCain the best. I disagree with him on a lot of issues, but he knows how things really are.
Were you in the 28th ward still with Bishop Ballard? It was just so completely awesome having Elder Ballard randomly dropping by and to have him as your grandpa? Wow.

I remember that from the 28th ward! I remember one interview with Bishop Ballard – I had a question for him and he didn’t know the answer, so he said, Let me call my dad and get back to you on that. He came to me after church that afternoon and said, “So, here’s what my dad said…” How cool is that?!
It’s too bad you missed Mitt’s speech. Check out http://www.mittromney.com. All his major stuff is on there. Although I think your argument for McCain is a little odd – you don’t agree with him but he knows how things are?? If you think he’s wrong, then maybe he doesn’t know as well as he should. I’d rather vote for someone I agree with than for someone with whom I don’t, even if he has a few more years experience. I mean, it’s not like Mitt doesn’t understand politics. Anyway, that’s not meant to come off harsh, I realize in text (rather than voice) it kind of sounds that way. We’ll have to discuss over Christmas. I know Brandon’s got plenty of ideas why Obama is the man to vote for.

I love the top ten reasons. That Funeral Potatoes dish really does sound- lethal. Frog-eyed Salad sounds oddly tasty, though maybe too sweet for my taste-buds.
I could use a couple of extra wives, heck even one would be handy!
Maybe this will inspire me to do a version for Episcopalians.
