Random thoughts for random people
1. Longest week ever. Seriously. I had heard tales and legends about the attending that I worked with, but since the first day had gone well and I had managed to keep her on task and we were done by 4:30, I thought that it was all exaggeration.

Oh silly mortal!

Hours of rounding. HOURS of telling and retelling families of what’s going on. None of my opinions mattered. She kept changing her mind as to what was going on. One minute she was harassing the primary teams about consulting us without a properly formulated question; the next, she was condescendingly putting me in my place for “refusing” a consult. I’ve never been so openly snarky before, because I was so tired and frustrated of the endless circles. And did I mention tired?

It also confirmed why specialists SHOULD NOT EVER try to do anything besides their specialty. Hello contributors to the rising cost of health care! Of course, I’m the one who getting the lectures from radiology as why a particular test wasn’t warranted; I knew that perfectly well, thank you, I just couldn’t convince my attending to listen to me. Ugh.

I get a new attending tomorrow, one who I’ve worked with before and adore.

2. I hate non-accidental trauma. Number 1 reason why I decided not to do peds. Heartbreaking.

3. I miss my friends who recently graduated. Some of them are still around for fellowships, but it’s not the same. One who moved accidentally called me on Thursday and I was so excited thinking she was in town. But she wasn’t. So instead I entertained myself looking at pictures from Neurobowl:


Have I told you about neurobowl? It’s basically a jeopardy! style competition between the graduating seniors, the nurses and the attendings. I’ve been in change of it for the last 2 years (and involved the 2 previous to that). Everybody in the department comes and the contestants dress up in some sort of theme. Last year, the seniors were rejected superheros (all with neurological related names). Can you guess who they were this year?

I was the emcee for the event. Last year I dressed up like Alex Trebek, complete with mustache (I’ve never been able to track down pictures). This year: Vanna White finally got to be host, oh yeah. I had a crown and everything (I ripped it off halfway). It was fantastic.

4. I’m loving my hair right now. I’ve been growing it out for the past year+. I got my hair cut in May and she really took a lot off (well, it had been a year since I had even a trim….), so it’s only now starting to look the way I want. Today, I woke up and decided that I wanted “Mrs. Coach” hair. I spent 2 hours curling it (this is why I’m not a girly girl. I’d rather sleep for those 2 hours). I loved the results and I got some nice compliments at church (one girl stated that I “looked romantic”, which I think was exactly the result I was going for). I’m thinking about buying some of the sponge curlers that my mom used to do my hair with when I was 6, because I kinda always wished I had curly red hair and maybe that would be faster to get results?

5. Someone just set off firecrackers down the street. How many days are we celebrating the 4th this year? I thought that 3 was more than enough!

6. I’m going to a neurocritical care conference in September. It’s held in San Francisco this year, w00t! I’m planning to go to a bunch of the lectures, but also skipping out so that I can track out places and neighborhoods to live. Because since med school, I can’t do all day long lectures without falling to sleep, and I’m already freaking out about how I’m going to figure out the best neighborhoods at the right cost, and what am I going to do with my car. Just the anticipation of moving is very stressful.
