Re: Ella Enchanted
The movie is one of my favorite movies ever! I actually wore out the DVD watching it…
The book is good as well, but it’s so very different from the movie. It’s much darker, and the plot is quite different. It’s still a really good book, but if you go into it thinking it’s going to be like the movie, you will be disappointed.
Ah yep. *sigh* The only good thing about that movie was that it only cost me a dollar and was truly one of the best mock fests that Liz and I have had. “Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights” probably squeezes by a hair, but otherwise… My friend Brooke put it best in her blog, when she was talking about her ten favorite children’s books that ought be made into movies, with Ella as her first choice: “Yeah. And let’s get it right this time.”
Question. Name me one movie that you liked better than the book. I’m really curious, because I can’t come up with much.

Hmmm. Movies from books are difficult…I normally like them, but I can’t think of a time I didn’t like the book better. (I did not really like the Ella Enchanted movie very much, though I did love the book in 4th grade – I haven’t read it since but imagine I still would like it – but to each his or her own! :))
I’m pretty sure I would like The Devil Wears Prada movie better, just because I think the book is reasonably worthless (I say this without having read most of it but in some confidence…I hate to sound like I think I’m all-knowing but I just can’t bring myself to read it), and Meryl Streep did a very good job, of course.
And I remember being very, very impressed by the movie of Matilda. The book is still always my favorite of the two (definitely!), but allowing for the differences, I thought they did a very good job.

I do hope you’re feeling better or feel better as soon as possible; I’m sending you the best of wishes. *hugs*
(You must read Ella Enchanted again! It’s the best. I read it at least one a year. Believe me, you’ll appreciate it so much more now that you’re older!)
I loved the little girl in Matilda. I don’t remember much, but I did think it was a good adaption. But I think I’d still call the book better… π
I’m feeling a little better. At least, I had a smile on my face at some points today. π But thank you! And congrats on your graduation!!

I have tried reading Little Women numerous times and have never finished it. On the other hand, I absolutely love the Susan Sarandon/Winona Ryder movie version, and have seen that numerous times.
You’re the first person I know of who enjoyed the movie Ella Enchanted more than the book. I do like the movie; it’s quite whimsical.
I recently reread the book and found it sort of…blah. I think I like Gail Carson Levine’s Fairy Tales better.
And I grew up on Little Women, so I have a very soft spot for it. I do love the movie (Susan Sarandon is phenomenal), although ever since someone pointed out the blooper of the Laurie/Jo kiss, it’s never been quite the same. π
For some reason, an older version of the entry got posted that missed a good portion of my point (and missed that I was quoting someone). I’ve gone back and edited. π I didn’t like the movie, but then I do often have problems with movie adaptions of beloved books (Harry Potter is an obvious example. I haven’t loved any of the movies–enjoyed the last two, loathed the first, tolerated the second). So it may just be a me thing, that’s why I was posting the question.
Have you read “Fairest”, her latest one. It’s set in the same kingdom as Ella and is much darker. I really enjoyed it.
Love your icon!!

Oh! I see your quote now. ;)…like I said, I liked the movie of EE but it was VERY dif. from the book. I did read Fairest when it came out and I did enjoy it. Which reminds me, a YA fantasy author you might like is Vivian Vande Velde.
I have very mixed feelings on the HP movies. I watched the first 2 recently and in some ways they had more ‘feeling’ than GOF–GOF I think was done on automatic. (I liked Cuaron the best.) We’ll see about Yates. π
I’m currently re-reading them all; I’m on GOF–which is far, FAR superior to the film. I still can’t believe that the director didn’t have Hermione glare at Fleur when she kissed Ron. Oh wait–he probably didn’t read the book. Right.

Chocolat.
I liked the movie waaaaay better than the book, though I did like the book, too. I just thought the book overdone and drama!queen-ey.
Oh, I’ve never read the book. But I adored the movie *moves it to must-buy category*
Thanks for the tip!

Oh, ditto! Had forgotten about that one! So true, the movie Chocolat is waaaaay better than the book.
Should watch that again. Mmmmm,
somewhat piratey Johnny Deppdelicious chocolate…Johnny Depp and chocolate. Honestly, could a movie get better?

I can thhink of a couple of examples where I thought the movie was as good as the book, but in a different way: The Princess Bride, and LOTR.
Both very good examples. (Although I’d still say that LOTR booksjust edges out the movies). It’s been a long time since I read Princess Bride, I may have to pull it out!

Oh, that movie was such a travesty! Rhyming narrator?? Talking snake?! The screenwriter deserves a prison sentence.
In answer to your question, one movie that comes to mind is Emma Thompson’s Sense & Sensibility. I won’t exactly say I like it better than the book, but I’m much happier with Marianne ending up with Col. Brandon in the movie than the book – it actually feels like a romance, instead of her being kinda sold off to him to keep the wealthy benefactor happy.
Here, here! It probably would have been a fun kid’s movie if they hadn’t pretended that it was any way based off of Ella Enchanted. (I thought the worst was the Cary Ellwes character. Really, we didn’t need it.)
Ah, Sense and Sensibility! Yes, I had forgotten how much I loved that movie! I’d probably put most of the Jane Austen movies into the “like as much as the books” because most of what I’ve seen have been really good adaptions. People don’t mess with her stories as much.

It’s a pretty close thing with me between Bridget Jones’ Diary, the book vs. the movie. I really like the movie a lot.
I think I like Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the movie, better than the book.
Sense & Sensibility, love the movie, and despite liking Jane Austen, have never managed to get through the novel.
I’m sure there are others. I tend to enjoy whichever media I encounter first, usually. If I’ve read the book, I’m disappointed by the movie. If I see the movie first, I’m usually happy with both.
I’ve only seen the last few minutes of BJ’D from tv. But I did enjoy the book.
And I haven’t read Breakfast! Is the book even worth trying to find it?
If I’ve read the book, I’m disappointed by the movie. If I see the movie first, I’m usually happy with both.
I think that’s exactly it. π

The book of Breakfast at Tiffany’s made very little impression on me, so no, probably not worth reading. It’s a novella, and it’s Truman Capote. But I know there are people who hate the movie and love the book, so it’s all relative.
AHH Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, even the mention of the name makes me giggle. Or almost as bad: a Cinderella Story, who knew you could hide your identity with a 3 inch square mask. Anyway, I thought the movie “A Walk to Remember” was better than the book. The book was kind of borring, not that the movie was a classic by any means but the guy was good eye candy. The princess bride book and movie were about the same, as they were both written by the same guy. The book for me is like watching the movie with the deleted sceens included. Anyway better go, there is only so many viewings of Baby Motzart (AKA Baby crack acording to Caitlin) I can justify subjecting Lauren to in order to play on the computer. Love ya sweetie, hope things get better.
